The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) Sushi Council is pleased to announce that Tristan International has joined as its newest member. Tristan is a leading North American supplier of ultra-low-temperature (ULT) frozen tuna, bringing unparalleled expertise in quality control and sustainable fishing practices to the Sushi Council.
Founded in 2003, Tristan International was established to deliver Japanese-style ULT frozen tuna to U.S. and Canadian markets. Operating out of Dania Beach, Florida, Tristan is one of the only vertically integrated tuna companies in North America. Its parent company, Transmarina C.A., is based in Manta, Ecuador, where catch is frozen at sea to –76°F hours after being harvested. This “super-freezing” process preserves the freshness, color, and texture characteristic of just-caught tuna that is favored in sushi and sashimi preparations.
“Joining the NFI Sushi Council amplifies our commitment to transparency, product integrity, and food safety,” said Jayson Gauthier, President of Tristan International. “Our super-frozen tuna delivers a consistent, premium eating experience, and working with the Council will help us raise standards across the sushi value chain — from quality control to responsible sourcing.”
“We are excited to welcome Tristan International into the Council,” said Michael McNicholas, Chairman of the NFI Sushi Council and CEO of Oddisea SuperFrozen. “Their deep expertise in ULT tuna, rigorous quality systems, and sustainability orientation make them a vital partner as we work to elevate food safety, traceability, and consumer trust across the sushi industry.”
